Garden Arch

Garden Arch

Spotted this while wandering randomly in the Katoomba / Leura area. I’m really not sure exactly where it was.

I liked the mix of colors, but I’m not so sure about it as a photo, it seems a little busy.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park

This is the main walkway down the center of Hyde park.

The water fountain is behind me and the war monument is just out of sight in the distance.

This is another instance of disappearing tourists (and pigeons), it was actually quite busy in the park this particular day, so I set the tripod up and took a half dozen photos.

Unfortunately the guy on the left was in no hurry to go anywhere, but I managed to vanish everyone else within about 50m.

Queenstown Gardens

Queenstown Gardens

Not sure about this shot, I think maybe the dark foreground gives it a cold feeling, which is a bit odd since it was a really nice day.

Another type of Dahlia

Another type of Dahlia.

Apparently this is some other form of Dahlia.

I promise I’ll be more verbose in the immediate future, but I’m tired and it’s a flower.

Another Dahlia

I really like the coloration of the flower petals in this one.

Dahlia

Dahlia

Flowers are great for photography, they look good with lots of bright and contrasting colors and they aren’t inclined to move around.

The flower gardens at Walter peak aren’t extensive, but they are quite picturesque. I mentioned earlier that we like to skip the farm demonstration in favor of wandering the grounds, this trip I spent some of that time playing with the camera and that’s when the current bunch of photos were taken.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that it’s a bad farm demonstration, indeed as far as I can tell it’s quite good, certainly the asian tourists seem to enjoy themselves. But as a Southland boy it’s hard not to view the entire exercise as fake and patronizing, so I avoid it.

Lily pads in the Queenstown Gardens

Lily pads in the Queenstown Gardens

The Queenstown Gardens occupy a headland on the eastern side of the town center. There is a pleasant walking path around the edge of the gardens with views of the harbor and lake. At a relaxed stroll the loop takes around 20 minutes and while staying in Queenstown we find it a great way to start the day.

After you finish the loop around the headland you cross through the middle of the gardens to return to the town center and that’s where this was taken.

Some of the credit for this shot goes to Andrea as it was her suggestion.
